Prior to the influx of the early settlers this area was known as the Chickasaw Indian Land and had been inhabited by our native brothers for over 10,000 years, the first white people to see the beautiful fertile fields and bountiful forests were the Spaniards in 1540. Around 1682 the French fur traders made camp at the area now known as Chickasaw Bluffs and the French General La Salle claimed all the Mississippi Valley for France. Tennessee became a state in 1796 and in 1818 Western Tennessee was acquired by the Jackson Purchase and Carroll County was established by the Tennessee State Legislature on Nov. 7th. 1821 from these Chickasaw Lands. Starting at the west bank of the Tennessee River and running to the east bank of the Mississippi, bordered on the north by Henry County and on the south by Madison and Henderson Counties this was in it's original state a very large portion of land.
