smothers@mckenziebanner.com A record 96 golfers, comprising 24 teams, competed in the annual Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament. Battling rain and nearby lightning strikes, final competition groups completed play and joined fellow competitors inside the golf course dining area to participate in the awards program. Receiving plaques and trophies in three competition flights were: second place - McKenzie Regional Hospital (John Holancin, Kevin Harvey, Mike Bayless and Terry Collotta); first place - Hamilton Ryker (John Austin, Chuck Latimer, John Wright and Spiros Roditis); and 2008 Camber Champion Carroll Bank & Trust (Kent Jones, Robert Barger, John Baumgardner and Billy Smith. |
In other other events,
Phillip Laws won the longest drive competition; Trent Odom won the
closest to the tee shot to the pin on hole six and Matt Russell won
closest to the tee shot to the pin on hole 15. Closest putt results were-third place (tie) Terry Collotta and William Thornton; second place-Leo Whittey; first place-David Pritchard, winner of the competition in 2007. Regarding the event, tournament organizer Gary Hatch said, "I am very thankful for everyone who participated and worked so hard to make this year's Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament a huge success." He continued, "I am pleased that a record 96 players participated and appreciate the 53 hole sponsors that contributed to this tournament. I am also proud that George Atwood carded a hole-in-one during the event. This has been a great day." |
Chamber President
Brad Hurley added, "Today we witnessed the largest turnout in the
history of this event. In fact, we had to turn six golf teams away. It
is clearly evident that this tournament is growing and getting better
every year." He continued, "Organizer Gary Hatch, leader of the event since its inception, provided an excellent example of commitment today by working at the tournament rather than going to Murfreesboro to watch his grandson Colin Hatch and the Huntingdon Mustangs play in the state baseball semi-finals. He stayed and made sure that everything was taken care of here. That kind of sacrifice and commitment is truly commendable."
Apologies for the black/white photos
this year, the webmaster's camera died before the tournament finished
and he had to swipe these from the McKenzie Banner. Below are a few of
the players before the camera malfunctioned. |
