POPULATION • Carroll County has a population of 30,00 people and is comprised of eight towns: Atwood, Bruceton, Clarksburg, Hollow Rock, Huntingdon, McLemoresville, McKenzie, and Trezevant. • Approximately 50% of our population lives inside the eight towns, McKenzie is the largest city with a population of 5.295. • During the period from the 1990 census to the 2000 census, Carroll County grew by 7.1%. During this same period the state's growth rate was 16.7%.
• Carroll County has 17.3% of its population over the age
of 65. This gives the county the eighth highest percentage of
individuals over 65 compared to the other 94 counties in TN. EDUCATION • Carroll County is one of only three counties in West Tennessee to have a 4-year degree institute and a post secondary technology center. (Bethel College & Tennessee Technology Center in McKenzie). The two other counties are Shelby and Madison. • Bethel College is one of only two institutions in Tennessee to have a Physician Assistant (P.A.) Program. The 2005 P.A. class has members from eleven states from as far away as California, Utah, and Idaho. • Carroll County has 5 special school districts and a county school system. The county system is responsible for transportation, the secondary technology center, adult education, high-need children, alternative schools, etc. By having 5 special school districts this allows for local control of our community schools and local boards are responsible to the district voters for the school tax rate. •
According to the 2000 census, 67.9% of Carroll County's citizens, 25 and
older, had a high school diploma (or equivalent) or better. This
compares to 55.3% in the 1990 census. JOBS NUMBERS • Carroll County has a labor force of 13,510. Our May 2005 unemployment rate was 7.6%. • During 2004, Carroll County had a 9.8% net increase in the number of jobs in the county. • In 1997, 25% of the labor force was in the garment and apparel sector. By 2000 the percentage had been reduced to 5%. we have worked hard to diversify our economy by attracting companies like BEHLEN. • Earlier this year, we announced PURITY FOODS was moving its packaging center to Bruceton, TN. This project has added 35 new jobs to our county. Late last year, the State of Tennessee opened a Department of Human Services Call Center in McKenzie and added an additional 70 jobs. HEALTH CARE • Carroll County has two hospitals. Baptist Memorial in Huntingdon is licensed for 70 beds. McKenzie Regional Hospital is licensed for 65 beds. Both hospitals have recently made major capitol improvements totaling more than 4 million dollars. • With our high percentage of residents, 65 or older, we have several retirement homes, nursing homes, etc. • 15% of our labor force is employed in the health care field. • 29.2% of our citizens are on TennCare. This figure is expected to drop to 19.2% after the cuts are made in TennCare. BELLWEATHER COUNTY • As you may know, the winner of statewide races also carry Carroll County. Carroll County has been on the winning side in the last 11 presidential elections. • Carroll County has 18,825 registered voters. In the last general election (Nov. 04), 66% of the voters cast a ballot. 1000-ACRE RECREATIONAL LAKE • On November 2002, Carroll County received its Section 404 Permit from the Army Corp. of Engineers for the construction of a 1000-acre recreational lake. The citizens of Carroll County voted on and approved a $10 wheel tax to pay the local share of the lake construction. In the most recent budget passed by Congress was a $500,000 appropriation for the lake. We need a total of 3.5 to 4 million dollars from the federal Government during the next 3 to 4 years to fund this project. This will have a major impact on the economy of Carroll County. DIXIE CARTER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER • The 500 seat Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center, known as "The Dixie" will open in the fall of 2005. This state-of-the-art facility will provide Carroll County with another opportunity to strengthen its economy. The center has an extremely impressive director, Ms. Lee Warren. CONSTRUCTION IS TAKING PLACE • Bethel College in McKenzie is building a new athletic complex, which will include soccer fields and a football stadium. • Farmers and Merchants Bank is building a new bank and corporate headquarters in Trezevant. The bank now has branches in Bolivar, McKenzie, Rutherford, and Three Way. • Carroll Bank & Trust is clearing way for a new banking facility in McLemoresville. The bank started in McLemoresville and expanded to offices in Huntingdon and McKenzie. • First Baptist Church in Huntingdon is constructing an 800-seat worship center in downtown Huntingdon. • Construction is nearing completion on a new 84,000 sq ft building at the Huntingdon Industrial Park South. • Just completed is the new Health Department in Huntingdon and KimRo Manufacturing has added 3,200 sq ft and an additional 45 jobs to their plant in Trezevant. |
